From Firetrucks to Friday Night Lights: Updating a Tween Boy’s Room into a Sports-Themed Space
Step 1: Start with a Clean Slate
The first step was removing the old theme—firetruck bedding, wall art, and bold primary colors. While it felt a little nostalgic, it also instantly made the room feel bigger and more mature. If you are actually going from crib to big boy bed, here is a link to the actual bedding set. It is high quality and washes well: https://amzn.to/47bCvwu
We kept the bed (because budgets matter!) and focused on updating the elements that would make the biggest visual impact.

Step 2: Choose a More Mature Color Palette
Instead of bright reds and blues, we shifted to a sporty, grounded palette:

- Tan
- Charcoal
- Cream
- Accents of gray
We created and painted one accent wall in a rich charcoal (Color is Peppercorn by Sherwin Williams), which instantly gave the room a more grown-up vibe. The other wall color is Sticks and Stones by Sherwin Williams.
Step 3: Bring in the Football/Sports Theme (Without Overdoing It)
The goal wasn’t to create a themed “kid” room—but a space inspired by sports.
Here’s what worked well:
- Neutral-themed bedding with subtle patterns 1.. Comforter: https://amzn.to/4bQveoo 2. Sheets: https://amzn.to/4sXxMXM 3. Pillows: https://amzn.to/4lUP8SR , https://amzn.to/40A7Tkz , https://amzn.to/4dtfNnk , Don’t forget the pillow inserts, I like down and feather so they can reshape and fluff easier: https://amzn.to/3P8pv4D (The actual comforter in the photo below is from Potterybarn teen: http://bit.ly/40zKfEO )
- A fun trash can (kids will actually use): https://amzn.to/47U1Zi2
- Throw pillows shaped like footballs (fun, but not overwhelming): https://amzn.to/3Ppt4mU)
We avoided anything too cartoonish and focused on pieces that felt more like a teen room than a playroom.

Step 4: Add Personal Touches
This is where the room really came to life.
We incorporated:
- Framed art of favorite sports (we ended up hanging it above his bed with no damage hanging hooks): https://amzn.to/47FXM1n
- A display shelf for trophies, medals, or signed memorabilia (we hung this above the desk area): https://amzn.to/3Pe1p8x
- LED Lighting for the bed: https://amzn.to/4lECMOq
- Lamp lighting: Similar Lamps and Shades: https://amzn.to/4bxWtTp , https://amzn.to/4lGUPUk
- Amazon Echo Dot Kids: Although this is not sports themed, he is able to access sports updates which he loves- https://amzn.to/47DF9Lu
These details made the space feel uniquely his—not just a generic sports room.

Step 5: Upgrade Lighting and Accessories
Small changes made a big difference:
- An industrial-style desk lamp for homework and gaming along with a desk and chair: Desk: https://amzn.to/4cUXtmS Chair: https://amzn.to/4bQPciM Task Lamp: https://amzn.to/4bwvJTj
- New curtains in a grid pattern, masculine color: Actual curtains are Potterybarn teen, but you could go with these ones in the black/cream color: https://amzn.to/4sWmHWU
- Storage bins to keep gear, books, and clutter under control for the closet: I LOVE this stylist laundry basket: https://amzn.to/4cVPvKf Pro Tip: buy two- one for darks and one for lights, no need to sort laundry again! Or they do make a double that is connected here: https://amzn.to/4spK8bg
If you have the space, you could also added a bulletin board/pegboard combo for schedules, photos, and team reminders: https://amzn.to/4uxtLe9
Step 6: Create a Hangout Zone
Tween years mean more time hanging out with friends, so we carved out a small “chill” space:
- A bean bag chair or small lounge chair: https://amzn.to/4uBcErR
- A side table for snacks or drinks: https://amzn.to/4rKGzuZ
- A spot for a gaming console or TV (if space allows)
This made the room feel less like a kid’s bedroom and more like a personal retreat.
Step 7: Keep It Flexible
The best part of this update? It’s not too permanent.
By avoiding overly specific themes and sticking to sports-inspired elements, the room can easily evolve again—whether that means a new team obsession, a different sport, or a more minimal teen style down the road.
Final Thoughts
Updating a tween boy’s room doesn’t have to mean a complete overhaul. With a few intentional changes—color, textiles, and personal touches—you can create a space that reflects who they are right now, while still giving them room to grow.
And while the firetruck days may be behind us, this new sports-inspired space feels just as exciting—just with a little more edge, personality, and Friday night energy.
