From Fire Trucks to Footballs- The Ultimate Tween Bedroom Update

From Firetrucks to Friday Night Lights: Updating a Tween Boy’s Room into a Sports-Themed Space

Step 1: Start with a Clean Slate

The first step was removing the old theme—firetruck bedding, wall art, and bold primary colors. While it felt a little nostalgic, it also instantly made the room feel bigger and more mature. If you are actually going from crib to big boy bed, here is a link to the actual bedding set.  It is high quality and washes well: https://amzn.to/47bCvwu

We kept the bed (because budgets matter!) and focused on updating the elements that would make the biggest visual impact.

Step 2: Choose a More Mature Color Palette

Instead of bright reds and blues, we shifted to a sporty, grounded palette:

  • Tan
  • Charcoal
  • Cream
  • Accents of gray

We created and painted one accent wall in a rich charcoal (Color is Peppercorn by Sherwin Williams), which instantly gave the room a more grown-up vibe. The other wall color is Sticks and Stones by Sherwin Williams.

Step 3: Bring in the Football/Sports Theme (Without Overdoing It)

The goal wasn’t to create a themed “kid” room—but a space inspired by sports.

Here’s what worked well:

We avoided anything too cartoonish and focused on pieces that felt more like a teen room than a playroom.

Step 4: Add Personal Touches

This is where the room really came to life.

We incorporated:

These details made the space feel uniquely his—not just a generic sports room.

Step 5: Upgrade Lighting and Accessories

Small changes made a big difference:

If you have the space, you could also added a bulletin board/pegboard combo for schedules, photos, and team reminders: https://amzn.to/4uxtLe9

Step 6: Create a Hangout Zone

Tween years mean more time hanging out with friends, so we carved out a small “chill” space:

This made the room feel less like a kid’s bedroom and more like a personal retreat.

Step 7: Keep It Flexible

The best part of this update? It’s not too permanent.

By avoiding overly specific themes and sticking to sports-inspired elements, the room can easily evolve again—whether that means a new team obsession, a different sport, or a more minimal teen style down the road.

Final Thoughts

Updating a tween boy’s room doesn’t have to mean a complete overhaul. With a few intentional changes—color, textiles, and personal touches—you can create a space that reflects who they are right now, while still giving them room to grow.

And while the firetruck days may be behind us, this new sports-inspired space feels just as exciting—just with a little more edge, personality, and Friday night energy.
